In this Design Thinking and Stop-Motion Animation workshop series, students will collaboratively conceptualise and produce their own stop-motion animated short films. They will be trained to explicitly use an adapted Design Thinking framework—empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test—to guide and structure their creative process. Through iterative feedback from peers and instructors, students will refine their work. The workshop series aims to nurture a passion for creative storytelling, develop design thinking in a fun and engaging way, and equip students with the confidence, knowledge, and technical skills to express themselves through the art of stop-motion animation.

Possible focus areas:
1) Southeast Asian Culture and Stop-Motion Advertisements
2) Mental Health in Singapore
3) Horror Comedy Short Films

The workshop series is structured to mirror a real-world animation pipeline:

Pre-production: Students will be introduced to cinematic techniques and key concepts in storytelling and storyboarding. These foundational skills will help them in conceptualising and developing their narratives in a clear and engaging audio-visual format.

Production and post-production: Students will bring their stories to life through stop-motion animation using media of their own choice, such as paper cutouts, puppets, clay, digital tools, etc. They will learn to use the “Stop Motion Studio” app to film their animated shorts, as well as accessible video editing tools, such as Canva and CapCut, to add sound effects and merge clips. This blend of practical and digital techniques will shape the final look and feel of their animated shorts.
